The European Open in Germany, part of the DP World Tour, concluded with Englishman Laurie Canter securing the victory. Despite this, David Puig’s chances of representing Spain at the Paris 2024 Olympics remain strong. None of Puig’s immediate rivals have managed to accumulate enough points during the European spring tournaments, despite wins from Adrián Otaegui and Nacho Elvira. As a result, Puig remains second in the Spanish rankings by a narrow margin.
Jorge Campillo, another contender, has also struggled to advance on the PGA Tour. He will join Otaegui and Elvira in the upcoming Volvo Scandinavian Mixed tournament. This event represents their last significant opportunity to secure the second Spanish spot for the Olympics, alongside Jon Rahm at the Golf National.
For Puig, maintaining his position is crucial. If Otaegui fails to secure a top-ten finish, or if Elvira and Campillo don’t achieve notable results, Puig’s place will be solidified. Additionally, Puig has one final chance to improve his ranking at the US Open qualifiers at Lake Merced, aiming to make it to Pinehurst and boost his standing further.
Rafa Cabrera also had a notable performance at the European Open in Hamburg, finishing seventh with a total of 284 strokes, just five behind the winner. This matches his best result in over a year, previously achieved at the Fortinet Championship in Australia last November.
The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, will take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) designated Paris as the host city during its 131st session in Lima, Peru, on September 13, 2017. Paris will join London as the only cities to have hosted the Summer Olympics three times, with Paris previously hosting in 1900 and 1924.
The upcoming Olympics mark a return to the traditional four-year cycle after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were delayed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
