Cormac Sharvin is tied for 22nd after the first round of the DP World Tour Qualifying School at the Millennium Golf Club in Belgium.
The Ardglass native, the only Irish representative in the qualifying field, made five birdies in his first round, with the only birdie he lost coming on the 15th – his sixth birdie. He turned around at -2 and then won two more on the front nine, with the last of his five birdies coming on the par-4 ninth.
He will need to stay calm over the next 18 holes to secure a 36-hole spot, and with about 20 spots available in the second period, he may need to shoot double-digit under to have a chance of advancing given his low scores on the first day.
German amateur Cedric Otten shot 29 on the back nine and completed a bogey-free, 10-birdie round to lead at -10, with local talent Kristoff Ulenaers close behind at -9.
Rowan Lester qualified at the Bristol Players Club last week and remains the only Irishman to have made it to the first stage of the 2024 competition.
