I don't know why Bob McIntyre Despite winning twice in his first full season on the PGA Tour, he wasn’t named one of the five nominees for the 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award?
Well, there's a good reason for that.
He is no Indeed, you are eligible for the award.
Although the Scot earned his first full PGA Tour card for 2024 by earning one of 10 cards through the DP World Tour last season, he has made multiple appearances on tour since 2020, having surpassed his rookie status.
Once a player has participated in more than seven After playing 10 events in a PGA Tour season, they will shed the rookie tag the following season.
McIntyre played in 13 events on the PGA Tour in the 2020/21 season.
Over the course of the season, he made the cut 11 times and finished in the top 25 four times.
McIntyre then played eight PGA Tour events in the 2021/22 season.
He made the cut six times that season and finished in the top 25 twice.
In the 2022/23 season, MacIntyre played just three events on the PGA Tour, making the cut twice and finishing in the top 25 once.
The Scot decided to spend much of last season trying to earn one of the 10 full-time PGA Tour cards via the DP World Tour standings, and he eventually achieved that goal, finishing seventh on the list.
His performances on the DP World Tour last season also saw him narrowly climb into the European standings, earning him a first crack at Luke Donald’s 2023 European Ryder Cup team.
MacIntyre then performed well at the Ryder Cup last September, scoring 2.5 points out of a possible 3 as Europe won by five points in Rome.
Fast forward nearly 12 months later, and McIntyre has taken his game to new heights, winning not just one, but two PGA Tour titles.
His first PGA Tour title came at the RBC Open in June.
It was an emotional win, especially with his father, Dougie, carrying the load for him.
In July, McIntyre won the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club to the roar of the house.
The two PGA Tour wins were enough to help McIntyre advance to last week's 30-player Tour Championship at East Lake.
McIntyre finished T17th.
Overall, McIntyre has played in 25 PGA Tour events this season.
He has accumulated $7.8 million 2024 PGA Tour Prize Money.
Therefore, all of the above explains why McIntyre is ineligible for the 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year title.
The 28-year-old McIntyre will now turn his attention to competing in multiple DP World Tour events to finish out his 2024 season.
He will compete in the Irish Open at Royal County Down next week, the flagship BMW PGA at Wentworth the following week, and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews in early October alongside his father Dougie.
The PGA TOUR has confirmed the following five players as candidates for the coveted PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year award:
- Matthew Pavin
- Nick Dunlap
- Jack Knapp
- Alejandro Tosti
- Michael Thorbjornsen
This looked like a straight shootout between Pavin and Dunlap.
Pavin won his first PGA Tour title at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this season and then tied for 17th in the FedEx Cup, while Dunlap became the first player in PGA Tour history to win as an amateur (American Express) and a professional (Barracuda Championship) in the same season.
The 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award will be announced later this season or in early 2025 at Sentinel Field in Hawaii, when Eric Cole will be crowned the 2023 champion.
Several great players have won the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award over the years, but no one has done it better than Tiger Woods in 1996.
Other major champions such as John Daly (1991), Vijay Singh (1993), Ernie Els (1994), Xander Schauffele (2017) and Scottie Scheffler (2020) have also had their names engraved on the trophy.
Mark Canevalle, who was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1992, passed away in July this year.
The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award was first established in 1990.
