Legendary caddy Billy Foster, who currently serves as Matt Fitzpatrick's baggage, has announced that he will reduce the number of tournaments he plays starting in 2025. This is Foster's 43rd season as a professional caddy.
The caddy himself posted his decision on Instagram, saying he would continue to work with Fitzpatrick but would only play in about 15 games this season.
Fitzpatrick's caddies are also open to new projects. This is part of the text of his post:
“2025 will be different, but look for a positive start to the season in Maui. After 42 seasons, it's time to try to share the workload with Fitz and reduce travel.”
He added:
“I'll still be playing about 15 games but will try to find other opportunities through re-speaking, the book, Sky (maybe [red] button) to help aspiring young golfers with course management and more (open to offer). “
Matt Fitzpatrick and his agent compete in 21 PGA Tour events, three additional DP World Tour events and the 2024 Paris Olympics. The player has only finished in the top 10 three times, all on the U.S. Tour.
Who is Matt Fitzpatrick's caddy Billy Foster?
Billy Foster told Golf Monthly in 2023 that his relationship with professional golf began in 1975, when he attended his first British Open as a spectator. The Briton also claimed that Seve Ballesteros has been his golfing idol ever since.
Foster began his caddying career in 1982, and the first player he worked with was South African Hugh Baiocchi. He quickly became one of the most respected and sought-after salesmen in the world, with a career that included collaborations with his idols Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia, Tomas Bjorn, Da Starring Len Clark, Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood.
Despite working with such a great player, Billy Foster won't get the chance to work with a Grand Slam winner until 2022. That year, Matt Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open, his first major championship, and Foster took care of his luggage.
Foster and Fitzpatrick began working together in 2018 after ending their collaboration with Lee Westwood. Fitzpatrick's partnership with Foster was excellent, if their output during this period is anything to go by.
Under Foster, Fitzpatrick won the 2022 U.S. Open and 2023 PGA Tour RBC Heritage. He also has four of his eight wins on the DP World Tour (2018 Omega European Masters, 2020 DP World Tour Championship, 2021 Estreladam NA Andalusia Masters and 2023 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship) and participated in two Ryder Cups, winning once.
