Tyrrell Hatton is determined to ensure his status as a LIV golfer does not harm his chances of playing for Europe in the 2025 Ryder Cup.
The English player needs to play in at least four DP World Tour events before the end of the season to have a chance to play against Keegan Bradley's American team at Bethpage Black.
Hatton, who finished T31st at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, his only DP World Tour appearance so far this season, needs three more events to earn him a spot in the 12-man field, and he already knows which events he will play.
Hatton competed in the 11th LIV golf tournament of the season in England this week. In the second round, Hatton finished second, two strokes behind overnight leader Andy Ogletree. The Legion XIII player said: “Yes, I will play the British Masters, the Spanish Open and the Dunhill Links.”
The first of those events will begin on August 29, two weeks before and after the LIV Greenbrier Golf Tournament and LIV Chicago Golf Tournament, while the Spanish Open and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be held in the weeks following the LIV season-ending team championships.
For Hatton, who joined LIV Golf shortly before the season began, earning a spot in the tournament was always part of his plan.
He added: “We had this conversation before I signed with LIV, so the DP World Tour was probably aware of my position, that I wanted to keep my membership and that sort of thing, and the Ryder Cup is obviously very important to me.”
Back in April, DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings assured Hatton and his Legion XIII captain Jon Rahm that they would have a chance to qualify for the Ryder Cup as long as they followed the rules, such as paying fines and suspensions for joining LIV Golf.
He said: “The fact is that under the current rules, if a player is European, is a member of the DP World Tour and follows the rules – if you don’t get released, there are sanctions and you accept those penalties – then there is no reason why a player who has already been granted LIV membership cannot qualify or be selected.”
Hatton qualified for his third Ryder Cup in 2023 via the world rankings. However, given his ban from the PGA Tour after joining LIV Golf, he will likely rely on the European rankings, which feature players known primarily for their performances on the DP World Tour or, failing that, as one of captain Luke Donald's wildcards.
Although Europe won the fight thanks to Marco Simeone (Hatton went 3-0-1), Donald’s team were still underdogs heading to the States, with Hatton determined to once again make his mark as Europe looks to claim its first American victory since 2012 in Medina.
He added: “I need to be part of the tour and I hope to score enough points in those three events to be able to play in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in November.
“Yeah, once the LIV season is over, my focus will obviously turn to the DP World Tour and try to get the points I need, with the Ryder Cup points starting the week in Dallas. Yeah, that's another motivation to play.”
