Tyrrell Hatton has revealed that his top golf goal for 2025 is to make the European Ryder Cup team, despite facing disciplinary action from the DP World Tour as a LIV golf star.
About a year ago, Hatton joined Jon Rahm's LIV team and Legion XIII (Rahm's team), which resulted in him being penalized by the DP World Tour for competing in conflicting LIV events.
This resulted in many LIV players resigning their DP World Tour membership, making them ineligible for the European Ryder Cup team. However, Hatton, who is keen to join Luke Donald's side at Bethpage Black, has retained his membership, meaning he must pay a fine and accept a suspension to be eligible for selection.
Interestingly, Hatton found a loophole. By appealing the penalty, he returned to the DP World Tour at the end of 2024, allowing him to compete on both the Tour and the Ryder Cup. When asked about his main goal this year, Hatton told the Daily Mail: “Playing in the Ryder Cup.
“I've appealed the fine, but as for the whole process, I haven't thought about it too much. All I can do is focus on the way I play, but obviously I want to play in the Ryder Cup. Really want to be.”
Hatton will start the new year on the DP World Tour this month, with the XIII Legion star confirmed to compete in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. He will be joined by several LIV stars, including teammates Lahm, Patrick Reed, Dean Burmeister and Adrian Meronc.
It was at the Middle East event 12 months ago that Hatton decided to switch to Saudi Arabia a few weeks later. “It's a big decision,” Hatton added.
“I initially said no in December, but then everything turned around during the Dubai Desert Classic. My head was a bit messed up and it was a weird time. Like I said, thinking about what you are, it was a bit It was a scary risk, but honestly, looking back on the past year, the results have been pretty good.”
Hatton's first year on the LIV circuit proved successful, finishing fourth in the standings after taking his first win at Nashville.
