Scottie Scheffler shot a 5-under 65 in the opening round of the Travelers Championship to move within striking distance of the lead at TPC River Highlands Golf Club.
Scheffler is aiming for his sixth win of the season and credited a slight swing maintenance for getting back on track after losing at last week's U.S. Open.
“I felt like I played pretty good,” Scheffler said after making four birdies, an eagle and a bogey in his opening 18 holes Thursday.
“I noticed something was wrong with my swing earlier this week, and now I feel like my swing is a lot better than it was last week.”
Scheffler turns 28 on Friday and is looking to tie his best first-round score of the season by taking the 36-hole lead.
But he will be chasing another birthday boy, 21-year-old Tom Kim, who shot a 62 in the first round to top the leaderboard.
King, a three-time Tour champion, is seeking his first win at the iconic event.
But no one is doing better on the 2024 PGA Tour than Scheffler.
The 11-time tour winner said he found a grip adjustment this week that helped him rediscover his form and shoot more than 60 for the first time since the Memorial.
He shot 65, ending a streak of six straight rounds in the 70s.
“It's a little hard to explain, to be honest,” Scheffler said. “But I definitely feel a lot better at the top of my swing, making sure I have the right grip.”
Defending champion Keegan Bradley opened with a one-under 69.
