Tiger Woods, who scored a hole-in-one to help his team finish second at the PNC Championship, believes his son Charlie's ceiling for impressing in golf is “limitless”.
The former world No. 1 competed in the 36-hole scramble with his 15-year-old son, with only past major champions or players eligible to play with family members.
Woods was tied for the lead after an opening-round 59 at the Ritz-Carlton Club in Florida, and hopes of victory grew when Charlie scored his first career hole-in-one on a thrilling final day.
The pair shot a 15-under 57 to finish tied for the top spot on the leaderboard at 28 under, tied with Team Langer. Team Langer consists of two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer and his son Jason, who scored a dramatic eagle to win in the first game. Guandong.
Woods has previously described the tournament as his “fifth major”, his fifth consecutive appearance in the event, and the 48-year-old is proud of his son's progress.
“he [Charlie) has gotten better at every facet of the game,” Woods said. “That’s a commitment to practicing and developing as a player. I think that most of us forget he’s only 15 years old.
“I know he’s been doing this in front of the media for a long time but, being only 15, I think it’s incredible what he’s been able to accomplish so far and the ceiling that he has is unlimited.”
Historic ace for Woods on final day
Charlie’s maiden hole-in-one came with a stunning tee shot at the par-three fourth, where he knocked a seven-iron to around six feet of the hole before watching it roll into the cup.
“That was the thrill of a lifetime to be able to have that moment with Charlie, make his first hole-in-one, Sam [his daughter] It's just our family and friends on the bag,” Woods added. “That's what this event is about. It's about connection and family.
“For us to have this experience together, I know we didn't win, but that's the fact that we competed. No one really made a mistake. We had to earn it and that's what you want to have. Hats off to the Langers – They played great.”
On receiving his first ace, Woods Jr. said: “It was great to have dad there. It was so much fun. It was just a perfect seven-iron with a little cut in there. Certainly never saw it go in. . So it sucks.”
What's next for Tiger?
Tiger's appearance will be his first at any event since missing the cut at the British Open in July and undergoing back surgery in September to relieve the cramps and pain he experienced during the 2024 season, while Woods was unable to play earlier this month It’s time for the Hero World Challenge.
“I’m still far from competitive shape,” Woods admitted on the PGA Tour website. “I'm a great scramble partner. We put together a great team this week and that's the whole fun of it.”
He later added: “I did a few things here and there. I was able to hit a few shots here and there. It's just training every day, doing the little things and getting better, and I'll continue to get better next year.”
Woods has committed to appearing in the inaugural TGL competition starting in January, where he will represent “Juniper Links” in the indoor golf league that mixes virtual and real-time golf, although his full 2025 schedule has not yet been confirmed.
