Six-time DP World Tour champion Marcel Sim has put on hold a “big” party to celebrate his Italian Open victory to focus on his push for a top 50 finish in the world in the coming weeks.
Sim beat Tom McKibbin in a thrilling play-off at Adriatic Golf Club Cervia on Sunday, playing in just his fourth tournament since returning from hip surgery and making it his second consecutive DP World Tour title.
The German has never finished inside the top 10 of a major tournament and last finished in the world's top 50 in 2013, although Sim – who received 450 WhatsApp messages of congratulations after his win in Italy – will be hoping to build on the success of the latest DP World Tour event.
Sim told Sky Sports Golf podcast.
“Rolex events, Grand Slams, big tournaments – that’s the only way to get into the top 50 in the world, to get into the Ryder Cup and qualify for the Masters.
“That's a big goal of mine going into the Scottish Open and the British Open. I'm not going to waste time partying. I've got three or four weeks off after the Open and it's going to be party time, believe me – lots of partying, but I'm going to be training hard for those three weeks.”
The German immediately returned home to compete in the BMW International Open. Sky Sports Livethen played in the Genesis Scottish Open and the British Open before celebrating his Italian title.
“I’m going to be very busy, but I’m just trying to broaden my horizons,” Sim added. “There’s still a lot of stuff to come.”
“The European Tour ends this week and we still have a chance to win it, two in a row… all that is in the air now.
“I tried my best, just let it happen and celebrate with the crowd. Let's have a golf party, not an alcohol party.”
In this bonus podcast edition, host Josh Antmann talks to Sim about his win at the Italian Open, how he felt about the final few holes, some past doubts about his future, and more!
