LIV Golf’s Sergio Garcia will rejoin the DP World Tour for the 2025 season and seek to compete in next year’s Ryder Cup.
Garcia, 44, is the tournament's record scorer and is looking to equal Lee Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo's European record of 11 appearances in the biennial tournament.
However, in order to achieve this, the Spaniard must deal with the hefty fine (reportedly in excess of £1 million) levied on him by the Tour for his previous defection to compete in LIV events, and he must also serve a suspended sentence.
A spokesman for the Europe-based DP World Tour confirmed that former Masters champion Garcia submitted his application to return to membership before the Nov. 17 deadline.
European players wishing to be selected for the Ryder Cup must be members of the Tour.
“He has paid the fine but must serve his suspension before participating in the DP World Tour,” the spokesman added.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held from September 26 to 28 in Bethpage, New York.
Europe captain Luke Donald recently said he has been in discussions with Garcia about the Spanish star returning to the tour and being eligible to join the team.
Garcia has won 16 titles on the European Tour and 11 on the PGA Tour, with his 2017 Masters title also included in both counts.
In 2022, he joined other big names in the sport in the independent Saudi-funded LIV Golf Series.
In May 2023, he resigned from the European Tour membership after an arbitration panel ruled in favor of the DP World Tour and confirmed its authority to fine and ban players who participate in LIV golf events without permission.
