Sergio Garcia is taking his first steps towards making the 2025 Ryder Cup team.
The 44-year-old Spaniard has reapplied for membership on the DP World Tour, Bunkered reported on Monday. To join the European Ryder Cup team, a player must have DP World Tour eligibility, something Garcia no longer holds since resigning last May.
However, Garcia has reportedly decided to pay the fine and serve his sentence. He is expected to be eligible starting in 2025.
In a statement provided to Bunkered, a DP World Tour spokesperson said: “Sergio Garcia submitted his return to the DP World Tour for the 2025 season ahead of the deadline on Sunday, November 17. Application for membership.”
Last year, Garcia finished third in the LIV Golf season-long individual standings and earned a win in his native Valderrama, Spain.
Once he pays his fine and serves his suspension, he can return to the DP World Tour and officially qualify for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. During his career, Garcia compiled a 25-13-7 record in the Ryder Cup.
Last month, at the Ryder Cup press conference “One Year Later,” Europe captain Luke Donald said of Garcia: “He thinks he can play. He wants to play. I don't think he's talked to me about being a player. Assistant captain, but again, he has to rejoin the tour to be eligible. He's certainly very interested in it and he understands everything involved and whether he's ready to do it or not, it's up to him.
“If you meet the rules and regulations set by the DP World Tour, then you are eligible. There are a lot of LIV players who are playing on LIV and they are now eligible so I can pick them as I please.”
