The European Ryder Cup team has changed its selection process for the 2025 tournament. The updated qualification system will place greater weight on PGA Tour performances than before, while LIV Golf results will not be recognized.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., from September 26 to 28. In 2023, Europe, led by returning captain Luke Donald, defeated the heavily favored United States at the Marco Simeone Stadium in Rome.
The Ryder Cup news cycle has been busy for the U.S., too. In July, the PGA of America shocked the golf world by announcing PGA Tour veteran Keegan Bradley as the 2025 U.S. team captain. Tiger Woods withdrew due to off-course obligations. Bradley said he would welcome Tiger (as assistant captain) and LIV players to the fold.
Here's some information about the latest changes announced on Tuesday.
New European Ryder Cup format
As captain, Donald (along with assistant captains Edoardo Molinari and Thomas Bjorn) will still have six wild-card picks on the 12-man team.
The remaining six spots will be determined by a new overall ranking that takes into account weighted results from the four major championships, PGA TOUR signature events (including The Players Championship), the FedEx Cup Playoffs (the PGA TOUR's main event) and prestigious events on the DP World Tour.
For the majors, the Ryder Cup will award 5,000 points. The other listed PGA Tour events will award 3,000 points. The DP World Tour Rolex Series and PGA Tour FedEx Cup Championship will also award 2,000 points. The smaller tournaments on both tours will award lower point totals.
LIV golf results will not be recognized. (The same is true for the Official World Golf Ranking, which limits LIV players' access to major championships and the Olympics.)
