Robert MacIntyre Scottish Open It's been a year since Rory McIlroy's heartbreak.
MacIntyre was two shots behind 54-hole leader Ludwig Aberg heading into the final round at the Renaissance Club.
Although he fought his way back into contention, he appeared to have missed a great opportunity for a thrilling victory after a mishit tee shot on the 16th hole.
The Scotsman got into trouble on the par 5.
He whacked the golf ball hard through the knee-high fescue, trying to get it onto the fairway.
When his ball didn't move, he realized he was standing on the sprinkler head and the umpire allowed him a free toss.
McIntyre then hit a stunning shot and converted an eagle putt to tie Adam Scott.
He then birdied the final hole and broke down in tears as he won his hometown Open.
MacIntyre was left heartbroken 12 months ago when McIlroy birdied the final hole.
“I got some luck on the 16th hole, which is what you need to win a golf tournament,” the Scot said.
“I was yelling and swearing at the ball because I knew it was my only chance to actually make birdie.
“You used the rules to your advantage, and I'm lucky. It was meant to be.”
McIntyre said he may still have some alcohol in his system when he plays in the British Open next week.
He added: “I will celebrate this with my family, friends and everyone here.
“I’m going to celebrate this with all my strength.
“When we play the British Open, we play the British Open.”
McIntyre is the first local champion of the Scottish Open since Colin Montgomerie 25 years ago.
