Sergio Garcia is on the verge of qualifying for the Ryder Cup again.
A DP World Tour spokesman said the 44-year-old Spaniard, who joined LIV Golf in 2022 and officially resigned from his DP World Tour membership in May 2023, had applied for reinstatement on the European Tour ahead of Sunday's deadline qualifications. British Bunker Network, first reported this story.
according to bunkerAccording to reports, Garcia will pay unpaid fines totaling more than 1 million euros and must also serve a ban before participating in the DP World Tour next year. Once Garcia meets those requirements, he will be eligible to play in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in September, provided he also plays in at least four events next season.
Prior to joining LIV, Garcia was a regular on the European Ryder Cup team, making nine consecutive appearances, most recently at Whistling Straits in 2021, and compiled a record of 25 wins, 13 draws and 7 losses. Although Garcia dropped to No. 415 in the Official World Golf Ranking, he is coming off an impressive season at LIV. He is third in the league's individual standings with one win and three runner-up finishes. He also tied for 12th at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June.
Luke Donald, who will captain Europe's Ryder Cup for a second time next year, was asked about Garcia last month.
“He thinks he can play,” Donald said. “He wants to play. I don't think he's talked to me about being assistant captain, but again, he has to rejoin the tour to be eligible. He's certainly very interested in it. He understands everything that's involved and, whatever he It's up to him to decide whether he's ready to do it or not, but we've definitely had that discussion.”
Donald added: “If you meet the rules and regulations set by the DP World Tour, then you are eligible. There are a lot of LIV players who are playing on LIV and they are now eligible so I can pick them as I please.”
