The PGA Tour’s Players Advisory Council (PAC) is reportedly considering significant changes that could reshape the North American golf circuit in the coming years. According to Golfweek, PAC members met this week before the BMW Championship to discuss potential adjustments for the 2026-2027 season.
One of the main topics of discussion was the possibility of reducing field sizes for regular Tour events. Currently, fields typically consist of 144 to 156 players. However, concerns have arisen about the impact of these large field sizes, particularly related to daylight constraints and the frequency of missed cuts on Fridays.
If this change is implemented, it could lead to further discussions about how many players would be able to retain their Tour cards. Presently, the top 125 players in the FedExCup standings secure their Tour cards. A reduction in field sizes could potentially lower this number to 100, impacting many players’ careers.
A source familiar with the discussions emphasized the urgency of finalizing these changes for the 2026 season, noting that 2025 is already set, and players need to know what they are competing for in the upcoming seasons.
While no formal vote has been held, an anonymous player involved in the discussions described the meeting as positive and collaborative, indicating a strong partnership between players and Tour leadership.
In related news, the PGA Tour recently announced its full schedule for the 2025-2026 season, which remains largely similar to the current year’s lineup. Notable changes include the Memorial Tournament moving back to its original date to accommodate Jack Nicklaus and the RBC Canadian Open being played the week before the U.S. Open. The schedule also features eight signature events with enhanced prize money, ensuring plenty of excitement for players and fans alike.
As the PGA Tour continues to evolve, these potential changes reflect ongoing efforts to optimize the competitive structure and ensure the best possible experience for both players and spectators.
