Cameron Young shot a historic “round of 59” on day three of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut to move into contention.
Young finished his career with two eagles and seven birdies at TPC River Highlands, finishing with a bogey-free 59. It was the 13th sub-60 score in PGA Tour history and the first sub-60 score by Young since Scottie Scheffler’s second-round total at the Northern Trust in 2020.
The American's total put him at 13 under for the tournament and in a strong position to challenge for his first PGA Tour title, having finished runner-up seven times before but without a breakthrough win.
“It started out pretty good,” Young said. “I can't say I expected it. I've played better than my score, but waking up this morning, I really didn't expect that I would be five under through four rounds and keep going! It was fun, and I felt like I was in control of my emotions all day.”
Young, who was 11 shots behind halftime leader Tom Kim heading into the weekend, made back-to-back birdies in the third round and then blasted a hole-in-one from 142 yards for eagle on the par-4 third hole.
Young rolled in from 20 feet on the fourth hole, then came within inches of a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth hole, capping off a string of pars with an easy hole-in to finish the round at six under.
The world No. 23 added another birdie on the ninth hole to finish with a first-nine score of 28, then used his advantage on the par-five 13th hole to hit a great tee shot on the drivable par-four 15th to leave himself with a close eagle.
He needed two birdies in his final three holes to match Jim Furyk’s 58 on this course in 2016, and he left his approach 7 feet from the hole on the 16th, but got even closer on the next hole to reach 11 under.
Young made another birdie, so he needed another birdie on the final hole to tie the lowest score in PGA Tour history, but he missed the fairway on the final tee and had to hole out from 10 feet to save par and end the day bogey-free.
Young’s previous low score on the PGA Tour was 62, set in the second round of the 2022 Genesis Invitational.
Who else shot 59?
Al Geiberger was the first player to shoot sub-60 at the 1977 Memphis Classic, and Chip Beck was the second at the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational.
