Akshay Bhatia and England's Aaron Rai shot four-under-par 68s to stay tied for the lead in the third round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit on Saturday.
American players Bhatia and Rai are tied for the lead this round, but their overall lead has shrunk. Rai had five birdies and one bogey, while Bhatia did not make a bogey for the third consecutive round.
They were all at 17-under 199 heading into Sunday's final round.
Cameron Young (67) birdied three of his final five holes, while Australia's Cam Davis (66) birdied three of his first four holes to complete a bogey-free round, and both were one shot back at 16 under.
Sam Stevens (66), who birdied his last two holes, and South Africa's Erik van Rooyen (68), who did not make a bogey, were both at 15 under.
Amateurs Luke Clanton (65), Joel Dahman (68) and Australian Min-woo Lee (66) tied for seventh at 14 under. Clanton climbed to a tie for second at the end of the third round before the others seized scoring opportunities in the early evening.
“This is my first PGA Tour event and it’s awesome to be in contention right now,” Clanton said.
Clanton, 20, a Florida State University golfer, played in the U.S. Open earlier this month and made the cut and tied for 41st. On Saturday, he made eagle on the par-5 14th hole, just two holes away from his only bogey of the round.
Defending champion Rickie Fowler shot 67, 11 under. The third round started significantly later and tee times were adjusted, with golfers using the first and 10th tee areas as starting points.
Will Zalatoris retired in the third round, citing a back injury. He was seven under through the first two rounds but was three over through eight holes before finishing on Saturday.
