Rory McIlroy will return to Dubai as he aims to win a third DP World Tour Championship at the season-ending Rolex Series event from November 14-17 and equal the record of six Harry Vardon Trophies set by the late great Seve Ballesteros.
The reigning Race to Dubai champion kicked off his 2024 season by successfully defending his title at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. The Northern Irishman has been at the top of the leaderboard since January, thanks to a runner-up finish at the Dubai Invitational and strong performances in the first three majors.
Jumeirah Golf Estates’ famous clay course has been a brilliant venue for the world number three, who has won twice and topped the season standings in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022 and most recently 2023.
The 35-year-old has clearly risen to third place in the most Race to Dubai wins, just one behind Ballesteros and three behind Colin Montgomerie, and he will be looking to add another European No.1 crown to his already impressive career.
The four-time major champion, who currently leads Adam Scott by 1,554.39 points in the Rolex Partners Race to Dubai Rankings, will spend two weeks in the United Arab Emirates after confirming he will compete in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first event of the DP World Tour Playoffs, a new two-tournament series that also includes the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
After the “Back 9” event, the top 70 players will gather at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi, after which the top 50 players will head to Dubai for a dramatic end to the new season.
“I always look forward to playing in the DP World Tour Championship at the end of the season,” said McIlroy. “Dubai is a special place for me and I’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of success there. To have the chance to equal Seve’s record is huge, he was a pioneer in European golf and his impact on the world game cannot be overstated.
“The next few weeks will be filled with important tournaments in the Middle East, the DP World Tour Play-Offs will be my main focus and I will just focus on playing good golf and getting more titles.”
