LIV Golf's Tyrrell Hatton to return to DP World Tour British Masters despite pending appeal

LIV Golf Star Tyrell Hatton Debut DP World Tour This week, the British Masters is being held at the Belfry for the first time in seven months.

Although Hatton joined LIV Golf Club earlier this season, he is eligible to play in the first Ryder Cup qualifier, the Sir Nick Faldo-hosted British Masters, on Thursday, August 29, as he has served his ban on the DP World Tour.

GolfMagic spoke to a DP World Tour spokesperson this week to clarify Hatton's current status as the British player seeks to make the European Ryder Cup team for a fourth time in September 2025.

A DP World Tour spokesperson confirmed to GolfMagic on the eve of the British Masters: “Tyrrell has been sanctioned for breaching the DP World Tour's conflicting tournament rules. He is currently appealing the sanction and is eligible to compete in the Betfred British Masters under DP World Tour rules.”

Hatton last played in a regular DP World Tour event at the Dubai Desert Classic in late January 2024, where he finished T31.

He was then snatched away by European Ryder Cup teammate Jon Rahm to join LIV Golf's Legion XIII team, which meant he was ineligible for the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.

Hatton is believed to have signed a $60 million contract with the Saudi-funded track, which is reportedly 10 times less than Lahm's five-year contract.

Why was Tyrrell Hatton allowed to compete on the DP World Tour?

Hatton's current situation is similar to that of all other DP World Tour members, who have appealed against sanctions imposed on them for participating in LIV golf events in previous years.

As a current member of the DP World Tour, the British player can continue to play on the DP World Tour pending the outcome of his appeal.

Hatton has already served out his ban on the DP World Tour so he will not be banned from the Sir Nick Faldo-hosted British Masters.

The six-time DP World Tour champion has also confirmed he will play in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns from October 3-6.

Hatton is bullish on his victory in the homeland of golf, having won the event in back-to-back seasons in 2016 (his first DP World Tour title) and 2017.

Unfortunately, he will not be able to play in the BMW PGA Championship (Sept. 19-22) at home to Wentworth, a tournament he won during the pandemic in 2020, as it conflicts with LIV Golf’s season-ending team championship in Dallas.

But Hatton plans to return to the DP World Tour a week later at the Spanish Open from September 26 to 29.

GolfMagic has also learned that because Hatton’s appeal is pending, his fine will be suspended until the outcome of the appeal process, and the same will be true for other members when they appeal.

This week, Sir Nick Faldo hosts the British Masters, with Hatton currently 82nd in the Race to Dubai standings.

So far this season, he has earned a total of 388.94 points, including excellent results such as T31 at the Dubai Desert Classic, T9 at the Masters, T63 at the PGA and T26 at the U.S. Open.

Hatton captured his first LIV golf title a month ago in Nashville but missed the cut in the Open Championship.

The English player is currently third in the LIV Golf League Individual Championship with one match left, where he will face off against his Legion XIII captain Rahm and Torque GC captain Joaquin Niemann.

Hatton will try to help the XII Corps win the team title at Marido Golf Club on September 20-22.

But once the LIV Golf League season officially wraps up in Dallas, all of his attention will turn to the DP World Tour in November.

That's if he can rack up enough points at the British Masters, Spanish Open and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship to secure himself a spot in the top 70 of the DP World Tour standings.

This will secure him a spot in the first event of the DP World Tour's new playoff series, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which takes place at Yas Links from November 7-10.

This is another tournament where Hatton has had success, although his 2021 victory came at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

If Hatton finishes in the top 50 after that event, he will compete in the 60-man season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai from November 14-17.

Jon Rahm

As for Rahm's current situation on the DP World Tour, GolfMagic has learned from the DP World Tour that the former world number one has not yet confirmed his participation in any upcoming tournaments on the schedule.

Like Hatton, Rahm decided to stay on the DP World Tour in order to continue to be a future European Ryder Cup player.

Adrian Meronk of LIV Golf did the same thing.

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald recently confirmed a new qualification system for the 2025 tournament.

The most notable change is that six players will move from one List.

In previous years, the team was made up of players from the European and World rankings, as well as wildcard players.

Donald will once again have six captain's options.

Qualifying for the 2025 Ryder Cup will begin with the British Masters at Belfry.

The program will end on August 24, 2025.

The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York from September 26-28.
