The final of the historic KLM Open on the DP World Tour was delayed by two hours due to the Extinction Rebellion (XR) action protest in Badhoevedorp, the Netherlands.
XR activists decided to block the entrance to the International Golf Club on Sunday.
Police were called to the golf course.
The final set of matches was originally scheduled to kick off before 1pm local time, but finally started at 3pm.
XR activists claim their protest is against fossil fuel sponsorship of the sports industry.
The activist group posted some images on its social media accounts, which you can view below.
XR said: “With the help of fossil fuel sponsors such as KLM, Tata, Schiphol Airport and Audi, the KLM Open is contributing to sports whitewashing: they are using the sport to ‘whitewash’ their own bad reputation.”
“The sponsors of the KLM Open are big polluters who are causing victims all over the world.”
The tournament was founded in 1912 and was originally called the Dutch Open, but has changed its name several times due to different sponsors.
The Dutch Open is subject to frequent changes in the European Tour schedule.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has been the main sponsor of the Dutch Open on several occasions.
The company sponsored the event from 1981 to 1990 and again from 2004 to 2019.
KLM then took a two-year break before returning in 2023.
