Jon Rahm has reportedly decided to skip the DP World Tour Championship after playing at least four regular-season games to retain his membership. The Spaniard is also hoping to be named in Luke Donald's European squad for next year's Ryder Cup.
Rahm entered the top 50 in the DP World Tour rankings, qualifying for the DP World Tour Championship. The £8.2 million event is the final event on the Tour calendar and is limited to 50 players.
A record three titles at the Globe Stadium have made the tournament one of the 29-year-old's favorites. However, he chose not to participate.
“Jon Rahm has not competed in the DP World Tour Championship,” a spokesperson told Golf Magic.
Rahm also missed the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship earlier this month. He has been allowed to return to the DP World Tour but is appealing the fine he received late last year for playing on the breakaway LIV Golf Tour.
“I'm not too keen on the fine. I'm not going to pay it and we've been trying to talk to them (DP World Tour) about how we can make that happen,” the two-time competitor said. the Grand Slam champion said recently.
“I'm going to play in Spain. Whether they let me play or not is another matter.”
Lahm joined the Saudi-backed league for a reported £450m and made his debut earlier this year. However, he hopes to retain his DP World Tour membership in order to compete in the 2025 Ryder Cup.
He only needs to compete in four tournaments to keep his Tour card. After competing in the Olympics, Spanish Open, Dunhill Links and Andalusia Masters, Rahm is no longer competing.
The former world number one recently welcomed a baby daughter into the family and has reduced the number of tournaments he plays in the final months of the year.
Some reports suggest that Rahm regrets accepting LIV Golf's offer, although this has not been confirmed.
“I'm 100 percent certain that if Jon was able to return the money to Saudi Arabia and get back on tour, he wouldn't be able to write a check fast enough,” an unnamed source reportedly told the Golf Digest host Jamie Diaz.
