Guido Migliozzi overcame windy conditions in Amsterdam to post the lowest score of the day and advance straight into final round contention at the KLM Open.
The Italian player is known for his low ball flight, and he put that to good use at the International, shooting a 66 and winning at 10 under in the toughest conditions of the week so far.
An increase in wind meant that Migliozzi felt conditions were actually “different” on the course and he was pleased to be in contention for a fourth DP World Tour title, just one shot behind 54-hole leader Mikko Korhonen.
“It was a really good round,” he said. “It was a tough round today and the wind picked up and it was a different direction so we were playing on a different course and I played really well.”
“I enjoyed being out on the pitch today, it was a solid day.
“It was tricky. It was a new golf course for all of us, but we knew it could happen and, you know, I tried my best to keep the ball low.
“I like to hit the ball low and I’m comfortable with that, so maybe a day like that will happen and I’ll try to take advantage of it, but I’m hitting it pretty well.”
Long putts on the fourth and fifth holes gave Migliozzi birdies, but a shaky tee shot cost him a shot on the ninth.
He got as close as seven feet on the 10th hole, hit a great tee shot on the par-3 11th that allowed him to start the front nine with a birdie, then he got in with another great approach shot on the 14th before two-putting for the win on the par-5 final hole.
“Even on the greens, I was able to hit great putts, just shot after shot,” he said.
“Everyone says that and it’s kind of normal, but it is what it is.”
