Singapore – Heavy rains forced the opening ceremony of the Singapore Classic to be postponed on March 20.
Organizers of the DP World Tour event announced on March 20 that the first round of the $2.5 million (S$3.3 million) tournament held at Laguna National Golf Resort Club will be held on March 21 and the second round will be held on March 22.
The first round was originally planned at 7.30 a.m., with 132 players divided into morning and afternoon waves.
At 6:10 a.m., organizers announced a delay to the first round of 12 noon, later noting that the afternoon wave will play a role on March 20. Subsequent updates confirmed that the first round will be postponed within one day.
On March 19, the Pro-AM event, which was cancelled due to the downpour of rain.
A spokesperson for the DP World Tour said in response to questions about whether the format of the game will be changed: “Due to the ongoing bad weather, part of the Porsche Singapore Classic will not start today and will be held on Friday, the 21st, with the remaining Tee Times remaining.
“The second round will be held on Saturday 22, with the kick-off time initially published. The DP World Tour will continue to monitor conditions before the first round.”
In order not to cancel the activity, at least 36 holes are required.
The National Environment Agency had previously warned that a surge in monsoons could bring temperatures as low as 22 degrees Celsius from March 19 to 21 with moderate to heavy showers.
Robert MacIntyre ranked 14th and will play the field at the Singapore Classics. 2016 PGA champion Jimmy Walker and three-time Ryder Cup champion Paul Casey also participated.
Singapore’s only representative at the event was 17-year-old student Brayden Lee, who earned his place after he won the highest amateur in the local qualifying match in February.
This is the third edition of Singapore's classic. The first edition was won by South Africa's Ockie Strydom, followed by Sweden's Jesper Svensson in 2024.
DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour, first came to Singapore in 1993.
Nick Faldo won the inaugural tournament, with major champions Vijay Singh and Adam Scott also won the subsequent DP World Tour event in Singapore.
