Europe's Ryder Cup team has announced major changes to the automatic qualification system for the 2025 Bethpage Black tournament.
The team, run by the DP World Tour, had previously used a two-list system for automatic qualifiers, drawn from the European standings (performance on the DP World Tour) and the World standings (participation in majors and the PGA Tour.) The European Championship has abandoned this format, opting instead for a single point system awarding just six automatic qualifiers that will favour global and US competitions over the old World Tour.
Points will be awarded for the following activities:
– Major Championship (5,000 points)
-2025 PGA Tour Signature Events and Playoffs + Attendance (3,000)
-DP World Tour Rolex Series (2,000)
-PGA Tour regular events (2,000)
-DP World Tour “Back 9” events (1,500 games)
-DP World Tour global events (1,000)
-PGA Tour Match (1,000)
The changes come on the heels of the PGA TOUR's new alliance with the DP World Tour, which enables the top 10 players in a DP World Tour season to earn a PGA TOUR card the following year. The PGA TOUR is taking a larger stake in DP World Tour production while also providing operational support.
Notably, LIV golf events are not certified for points. No LIV players were selected for the 2023 championship team, even though Jon Rahm’s defection from the Saudi-backed tour last December left several European members, including Rory McIlroy, insisting the rules should be changed.
However, LIV golf members are technically eligible as long as they do not relinquish their DP World Tour membership. LIV members who perform well in majors and DP World Tour events can qualify based on points or become candidates for captaincy selection. While Rahm is the most well-known European on LIV, there are several other potential candidates, including Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Melonk.
“This is an important milestone moment as we move towards the 2025 Ryder Cup,” said Guy Kinnings, new DP World Tour CEO. “This qualification system is undoubtedly much simpler and more streamlined than the one used in previous years and we are grateful to Luke and his vice-captains Edoardo Molinari and Thomas Bjørn for their important contribution over the past few months.”
Qualifying for the 2025 European Ryder Cup team begins later this month at the Betfred British Masters and concludes at the end of August next year.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black on September 26, 2025. Europe is the defending champion but has won just once in its last four away matches.
