Golfers on the LIV Golf Tour must pay fines and accept suspensions to qualify for next year's Ryder Cup in the United States, with captains Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley having to adjust to new rules.
Events on the breakaway LIV Tour will not count toward selection for the coveted tournament, as players must compete on the European DP World Tour or the U.S. PGA Tour to qualify.
LIV Tour players include Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, and if they want to be part of Donald's team, they will need to pay a fine and accept a ban from competing on the DP World Tour.
Donald will be given a qualifying list of six automatic draft picks before selecting a 12-man team, which will be determined based on the players’ performances in the DP World Tour.
However, he will retain six wild-card picks in hopes of defending the title he impressively won last year.
Donald told BBC Sport: “We have done a lot of work behind the scenes to get to this point and now our focus is on doing everything we can to defend the trophy in New York next September.”
Qualifying kicks off at the British Masters on August 29 and will only earn points towards DP World Tour events in 2024, giving Europe’s brightest stars more incentive to play on their continent.
In previous years, automatic selection was determined by two separate lists, with three players qualifying based on their performances on the DP World Tour and three based on the world ranking points they earned during the qualifying period.
But European Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings welcomed the change, calling it a “significant milestone”.
“There is no doubt that this is a much clearer and simpler system than the qualifications system that was in place in previous years,” he said.
Qualifying will continue until August 24 next year in preparation for the Ryder Cup in September.
