McIlroy said he was pleased with his performance on his first starting weekend of the year.
“After three days, I probably left myself with too much to do. I had a chance and I was burning the edge,” McIlroy said.
“It felt like I was playing really well without any input, and then today, I really felt like I wasn’t playing any different than I was playing the past few days.
“I just made a few putts when I needed to and made some good ups and downs. I feel like I'm getting better as the week goes on and that's obviously going to be good for the next few weeks. Said it was a good sign.” Despite missing out on the title, it was the Northern Irishman's 12th consecutive top-10 finish in the championship.
The last time he failed to finish in the top ten was in 2008, when he failed to advance.
