Evan Ferguson was thrilled after winning the DP World Tour BMW International Open in Germany to qualify for the British Open.
Scotsman Ferguson's two-stroke win in Munich makes him one of five players in the top 20 of the Race to Dubai – along with Jesper Svensson, Laurie Kant, Nacho Elvira and Matteo Manassero – who did not receive an exemption for the 152nd Open at Royal Troon from July 18-21.
The 28-year-old shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday to finish at 18 under, with England's Jordan Smith and Australia's David Micheluzzi tied for second at 16 under. Smith is tied for the lead with Ferguson after three rounds.
Ferguson revealed after the second round that he was happy to be fighting again after a recent bout of vertigo, telling Sky Sports “I just couldn’t believe it,” he said in a tearful interview.
“The last four holes I felt like I was dreaming, I didn't expect it to happen. It was crazy. I hit it really well, much further than I normally would.
“I want to play for my dad, my mom, my sister, my brother. I love them so much and every shot I hit is for them.
“It was a very difficult race. I've been complaining like crazy and being sick for the last two months. [This win] I felt so relieved. I was so happy.
“The British Open is the tournament everyone wants to play and I feel like I can do well there, as well as the Scottish Open next week. It's a really exciting time for me.”
Ferguson hopes to practice with Fleetwood ahead of Open
Ferguson later revealed he had planned to play in Tuesday's final qualifier for the British Open but thought he could perform well enough to earn a spot via Munich or the Scottish Open.
He added: “I didn't want to tire myself out too much. I felt I could probably win this week or get into the top 10 in Scotland and that would earn me a spot so we decided to pull out of the Open qualifiers.

“It was obviously a very good decision. It kept me alive and I'm here with the trophy. In fact, I got a text from Tommy Fleetwood saying well done, so I said to him, let's do a practice round. [at the Open] So I’m looking forward to that.”
Ferguson’s win was his third on the DP World Tour and first since the ISPS Handa World Invitational in August 2022, having won his first at that year’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters five months earlier.
Micheluz finished with birdie, birdie and eagle to share second place with Smith, whose title hopes were dashed when he hit water on the 16th tee while trying to get his drive onto the green.
Scotland's Connor Syme and England's Matthew Southgate both tied for fourth at 14 under, with Southgate making eagle on the sixth hole.
