Niklas Norgaard produced a stunning birdie on the back nine to take a four-shot lead into the final round of the Betfred British Masters, while Tyrrell Hatton fell out of contention.
Norgard led the way with a brilliant 8-under 64 at the Belfry, making nine birdies and one bogey to finish at 16-under for his first DP World Tour title.
The world No. 205, who tied for the 54-hole lead in last year's tournament before finishing seventh, has a commanding lead this year over Thriston Lawrence, who shot 67 with four straight birdies in the third round and moved into second place.
Ko Jung-mun was third at 10 under, England's Andrew Wilson was eight shots back in fourth ahead of Brandon Stone and Jasper Swenson, with half-time leader Hatton heading into the final day with a four-over 76, 10 shots back.
Hatton's hopes on home soil dashed
Norgard was two shots behind at the start of the weekend but took advantage at the par-5 third hole to advance first with a 15-foot birdie on the first hole, then added another birdie from eight feet on the seventh to turn the tide at 33.
At this point, Danish player Jeong-weon Ko was one shot ahead, Brandon Stone and Jorge Campillo were two shots ahead, and pre-tournament favorite Hatton was three shots behind after an erratic first nine, with only one birdie and three bogeys.
Norgard reached the green on the famous par-4 10th hole and made his first straight birdie to extend his lead to three shots, then holed out from 15 feet on the 13th hole to save par and followed that up with another incredible birdie on the next par-3.
Norgard birdied the par-5 15th from just off the green and followed it up with a two-putt win at the par-4 16th, where Norgard holed his approach from 40 feet across the green on the par-4 16th, temporarily extending his lead to six shots.
Norgard missed par on the par-5 17th when his tee shot went off target into the woods from eight feet, dropping him to 15 under, but he responded brilliantly with a birdie from 15 feet to extend his lead.
“it [winning] “It means a lot,” Norgard said. “All I'm going to do is try to do the same thing I did today, not try to grab anything or protect.”
Lawrence was even par for the day after a three-putt bogey on the par-4 11th, but he fought back with a birdie on the next par-4, and then the South African took advantage of the opportunity on the par-5 15th to make four birdies for his first of the day.
On the next hole, he holed out from 15 feet, tapped in after missing an eagle chance on the par-5 17th, and then made a stunning close birdie on the par-4 final hole to finish alone in second place at 12 under.
Hatton hit water on his tee shot at the par-3 12th for bogey, then hit his approach out of bounds on the next hole for a triple-bogey seventh, but he birdied the next two holes to finish with par 3 and tied for seventh at six under.
