Can we see Sergio Garcia return to the European team? The Spanish seem to be confident
When the 2025 LIV golf season begins under the lights of Riyadh, Sergio Garcia is looking forward to September, what a dream might be.
The Spaniard has paid back his DP World Tour fine after a meeting with his good friend and Captain Luke Donald and has set a record in the showdown of the biennial showdown between Europe and the United States Game 11 of the game.
But while he is now from nearly $1 million in one breath, every penny is worth it if he paints blue and gold again.
“I love the Ryder Cup – everyone knows that,” Garcia told Saudi News Channel Al Arabiya.
“This is my favorite event on the golf course. I think we were on the European tour of the DP World Tour again. It was the first standard to qualify as part of the Ryder Cup.
“Now, it will depend on how I’m doing throughout the year. Hopefully the number of games I’ll be able to play, hopefully if I’m really good I can do it myself.
“If not, then obviously I'm going to rely on the captain's draft pick. But we'll see. The only thing I can do is play the best golf ball I can play and see where to put me.”
In addition to 14 games from Liv Golf, Garcia was second only to Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann in the league’s individual standings last season ), who will play in the Masters, where he has been exempted from the PGA championship for life in past championships and won the PGA championship. Last month, he was invited. He will also have a chance to enter the U.S. Open after USGA announced the direct path to Liv Golfers earlier this week.
Garcia initially resigned from the DP World Tour in May 2023, when the arbitration panel ruled that the Wentworth-based tour could be fined and banned any player who played on Liv Golf. But the 45-year-old hopes to return to the BMW International Open in Munich, which was held in early July and then saw two LIV events opens in three weeks.
If he does book a New York ticket in New York, taking part in Bethpage's 45th Ryder Cup, Garcia is already the leading scoring scorer in European history, going to be with Nick Faldo ( Nick Faldo matches the appearance record held by Lee Westwood.
Afterwards, when the Samuel Ryder trophy returns to Ireland in 2027, he almost guaranteed the captain. But Garcia would rather stick with one shot in that particular conversation – and the possibility of competing with Tiger Woods – instead focus on another piece of play history.
“Obviously, there's some conversation maybe I might be the captain there,” he explained. “But, as of now, if my game is good enough, my focus is on playing now and hopefully doing some more Ryder Cups.”
“When this doesn't happen, we can try to focus on other things. But I don't want to think about that until I know I'm not enough to be a part of it.”
