Jacob Skov Olesen earned invitations to three of the next four majors, including the Open at Royal Troon, following his impressive victory at the Amateur Championship.
The 25-year-old defeated Dominic Clemons 4-3 in the 36-hole final at Ballyliffin to become the first Danish golfer to win the event.
Victory would earn him a spot in the British Open July 18-21 and the 2025 U.S. Open, as well as an invitation to the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club next April.
“I'm very honored to be the first Danish champion,” Olsen said. “I haven't really thought about it yet, but I guess it's something I'll have forever, which is pretty cool.”
How Olsen Achieved Historic Victory
Clemons was two shots behind after the opening 18 holes in the morning, and when Olson chipped in for birdie on the 23rd hole, he appeared to lose his composure and was six holes behind.
Clemons holed a 35-foot birdie putt on the 27th hole to close the gap, and then he hit the green on the 370-yard 28th hole to create an eagle opportunity.
Olson put pressure on his opponent by holed out a shot from the bunker for birdie, but Clemons responded by holed out a putt for the two-shot winner to pull within one again.
The Dane was five shots ahead again at the 30th hole and had a lucky break at the 31st when his wayward approach created a favorable position on the adjacent tee box, allowing him to half-hole his approach.
Clemons took the match to the next level with a powerful birdie putt on the 32nd hole, but on the next hole, his tee shot got stuck in the rough and he had to pick an unplayable lie.
The Englishman recovered brilliantly and reached the green, but he failed to save par and Olsen clinched the title with a two-putt.
“I will say that on the 15th hole, last putt, I was thinking, two putts from 15 feet and you’re in the British Open, the Masters and the U.S. Open,” Olson added. “That was probably the first time I really allowed myself to think about it.
“That's what you dream about since you're a little kid, being able to play in these tournaments, compete on these courts, compete on these fields. It's really cool.”
“I normally pride myself on playing my best golf in crucial moments and under pressure, but I didn't do that today. I didn't play well enough to win, simple as that,” Clemons said of his loss.
