Colsaerts, who reached a career-high world ranking of 32nd in 2012 but is now ranked 695th, said he was “happy to be here” after his second round match.
“I started hitting the ball well and made nine birdies, which is not a hole you would normally birdie, and then had a couple of spins, which was great and kept going,” he added.
John enjoyed a breakthrough career win in his native Australia in March but has just begun his seventh DP World Tour event and is ranked 1,007th in the world.
Speaking about the experience of playing on some of the best links courses in the world, the 23-year-old said: “It’s been fun.
“You don’t get that a lot at home, maybe some weird pitches where the play is similar but not exactly the same.
“That's the outlook for the week, enjoy it and take it all in. Go 18 [at St Andrews] It's always special, so remember it. “
